What do Facebook and Vogue Have in Common? Ads

Tom Gara
The Wall Street Journal
April 15, 2013

Over the past few months, ads have popping up all over Facebook. There are some people who don't like that they show up in their News Feeds and then there are others who don't mind. The ads are targeted at a specific audience to create traffic to a particular website. People should expected to see more of the same for quite some time and more ads will be seen on the social media site.

"Facebook has worked out all sorts of ways to track its users and work out what kind of ads they might like; it has also made it possible for outside advertisers to match up their own internal databases of potential customers with Facebook accounts, placing ads only on the pages of individually identified users."

Peter Kafka
All Things Social SD via The Wall Street Journal
April 16, 2013

Facebook is constantly coming out with new updates that include new features to all mobile devices. There is a new software that is going mobile and it's called "Chat Heads." As of now the feature is only coming to IOS devices and they will be included via a Facebook app update. "Chat Heads are a clever update on the notification system most smartphone users already familiar with - instead of getting a text update when a pal wants to talk to you, you'll see a circular picture of your pal's . . . head."

The new feature is scheduled to go live today (April 16). There is another feature that is included with the update and this one is called "stickers." ("Everyone has to have stickers in their messaging app), as well as a new version of the iPad layout, which mirrors the version Facebook recently brought to the desktop News Feed.:"

Is Facebook a Threat to Google?

The Wall Street Journal
April 9, 2013

Google is one of the most widely used search engines in the world. It's also one of the most used search engines on mobile devices, so one might think "what can challenge Google to become of the top search engines on mobile phones?" The answer might be a social media website which has the most users on the earth. Facebook might be closer to overtaking Google than you may think.

What is really driving Facebook is its display ads on mobile phones. According to a new report put out by IDC, they say that Facebook is now gaining on Google in display ads on mobile. Google is still at the top at search engine adds, but they are losing ground to mobile display ads which could open the door to social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and the internet radio station Pandora. Google is trying to use Google Plus as their main ad focus, but it's not working out as well as it was before and Facebook is starting to take advantage.

This news comes just a little over a year when Facebook started to sell mobile ads and they have become the biggest threat to Google, to become the biggest player on the internet.

A New Résumé Might Go Through Twitter?

By Rachel Emma Silverman and Lauren Weber
The Wall Street Journal
April 9, 2013

As social media sites like Twitter start becoming more popular, a new job opportunity starts to arise. New job titles like "Social Media Manager," have become available over the past year. These types of jobs didn't exist a couple of years ago, but now there is an increasing demand for people who know the ins and outs of social media. Twitter is giving employers an edge on finding candidates and getting in contact with them.

"Twitter, which was founded in 2006, isn't yet revolutionizing recruiting, but some employers are already using it to a great advantage, citing quick, direct contact with candidates and access to broad networks." There might be some confusion in this tactic, as there really aren't rules on how to recruit people through social media. Also this raises the question on how someone can put their entire résumé in just 140 characters?

"Vala Afshar, Enterays' chief marketing officer, says he's convinced that Twitter recruiting is the way to go. "I am fairly certain I am going to abandon the résumé process," he says. "The Web is your CV and social networks are your references."

People can interact and communicate with each other than ever before. The question is, if old school people can adapt and use social media to interact. There are a few journalists who don't join social media networks for whatever reason.

"I'm well aware that the gamut of social media platforms available today are tools that can enhance a journalist's connection to audiences beyond a city block, surfacing trends and real-time reporting and providing fast connections to potential leads."

Loker in his article said "They are tools, not necessities. I worry that social media presence has become a requirement to being a good journalist. I love journalism for daring to push boundaries, for watching my peers and co-workers find those untold stories and delve into the search of truth."

Tensions Rising Between Facebook and Developers

By Evelyn Rusli
Wall Street Journal
Updates March 19, 2013

"Facebook has long had a complex relationship with developers as it balances a complicated set of interests. The company says it is stepping up efforts to police the network by curbing spam and restricting apps that aren't adding sufficient value to the network."

App developers who are trying to work with Facebook, say that the social media company are conducting a crackdown in an attempt to stifle apps that compete with services that are owned by Facebook. Another part might include an effort to get developers to pay for the adds that are now on the social media giant.

Applications that have been affected include "Vintage Camera," which is a photo-sharing app, that is owned by Antoine Marcos. Recently Facebook decided to block "MessageMe Inc," which is a messaging service that was launched days prior to it being blocked.

Facebook Unveils New Home Page Design

By Somini Sengupta
The New York Times
March 7, 2013

"Hoping to tame the blizzard of information that has turned off many users and discouraged some advertisers, Facebook on Thursday unveiled a major makeover of the home page that greets users when they log into the site." Facebook has gone through major changes before, but this one doesn't seem to be as drastic as others before it. You always want to keep things fresh and updating the home page is one way to change things up a bit.

"The changes are designed to address the company's two most vital challenges: how to hold on to users at a time of competing, specialized social networks and how to draw more advertising dollars to please Wall Street."

"The topic-specific News Feeds could well persuade users to spend more time scrolling through various streams of content. And the redesign will offer bigger real estate for advertisers."

Using the New Myspace

By Mary-Ann Russon

Myspace used to be one of the biggest if not the biggest social media website around 10 years ago. "Its public profiles allowed users to upload photos, post short messages on other users’ profiles, send emails using the internal messaging system and receive updates from the much loved "Tom".

Since the introduction of other social media sites, primarily Facebook, Myspace has gone down in popularity. Facebook was able to adapt and start promoting artists' music and Myspace had to change its core philosophy"

The most interesting thing about the new Myspace is the fact that you can stream entire albums from a multitude of popular artists and replay the tracks as much as you want, completely for free."

The Unspoken Rules of LinkedIn Etiquette

By Staff Writiers

On most social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, you are able to post almost anything at once. That's not necessarily the case with LinkedIn. LinkedIn is strictly professional and you have to be careful what you put out there.

Having proper LinkedIn etiquette is essential for setting up the best professional profile. "Remember that LinkedIn is a professional site, not a personal one. Vacation pictures, whining, and drama are not appreciated. Stay professional, offering business discussions, events, and opportunities instead."

Another unspoken rule that is listed is to not make everything about you. "Be careful not to get to full of yourself."
