What do Facebook and Vogue Have in Common? Ads

Tom Gara
The Wall Street Journal
April 15, 2013

Over the past few months, ads have popping up all over Facebook. There are some people who don't like that they show up in their News Feeds and then there are others who don't mind. The ads are targeted at a specific audience to create traffic to a particular website. People should expected to see more of the same for quite some time and more ads will be seen on the social media site.

"Facebook has worked out all sorts of ways to track its users and work out what kind of ads they might like; it has also made it possible for outside advertisers to match up their own internal databases of potential customers with Facebook accounts, placing ads only on the pages of individually identified users."

Facebook is constantly coming out with new updates that include new features to all mobile devices. There is a new software that is going mobile and it's called "Chat Heads." As of now the feature is only coming to IOS devices and they will be included via a Facebook app update. "Chat Heads are a clever update on the notification system most smartphone users already familiar with - instead of getting a text update when a pal wants to talk to you, you'll see a circular picture of your pal's . . . head."

The new feature is scheduled to go live today (April 16). There is another feature that is included with the update and this one is called "stickers." ("Everyone has to have stickers in their messaging app), as well as a new version of the iPad layout, which mirrors the version Facebook recently brought to the desktop News Feed.:"

Is Facebook a Threat to Google?

The Wall Street Journal
April 9, 2013

Google is one of the most widely used search engines in the world. It's also one of the most used search engines on mobile devices, so one might think "what can challenge Google to become of the top search engines on mobile phones?" The answer might be a social media website which has the most users on the earth. Facebook might be closer to overtaking Google than you may think.

What is really driving Facebook is its display ads on mobile phones. According to a new report put out by IDC, they say that Facebook is now gaining on Google in display ads on mobile. Google is still at the top at search engine adds, but they are losing ground to mobile display ads which could open the door to social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and the internet radio station Pandora. Google is trying to use Google Plus as their main ad focus, but it's not working out as well as it was before and Facebook is starting to take advantage.

This news comes just a little over a year when Facebook started to sell mobile ads and they have become the biggest threat to Google, to become the biggest player on the internet.

A New Résumé Might Go Through Twitter?

By Rachel Emma Silverman and Lauren Weber
The Wall Street Journal
April 9, 2013

As social media sites like Twitter start becoming more popular, a new job opportunity starts to arise. New job titles like "Social Media Manager," have become available over the past year. These types of jobs didn't exist a couple of years ago, but now there is an increasing demand for people who know the ins and outs of social media. Twitter is giving employers an edge on finding candidates and getting in contact with them.

"Twitter, which was founded in 2006, isn't yet revolutionizing recruiting, but some employers are already using it to a great advantage, citing quick, direct contact with candidates and access to broad networks." There might be some confusion in this tactic, as there really aren't rules on how to recruit people through social media. Also this raises the question on how someone can put their entire résumé in just 140 characters?

"Vala Afshar, Enterays' chief marketing officer, says he's convinced that Twitter recruiting is the way to go. "I am fairly certain I am going to abandon the résumé process," he says. "The Web is your CV and social networks are your references."

By Rebecca Rolfe

March 28

Social media is an industry that has been rapidly changing the world. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus have exploded over the years. People can interact and communicate with each other than ever before. The question is, if old school people can adapt and use social media to interact. There are a few journalists who don't join social media networks for whatever reason.

"I'm well aware that the gamut of social media platforms available today are tools that can enhance a journalist's connection to audiences beyond a city block, surfacing trends and real-time reporting and providing fast connections to potential leads."

Loker in his article said "They are tools, not necessities. I worry that social media presence has become a requirement to being a good journalist. I love journalism for daring to push boundaries, for watching my peers and co-workers find those untold stories and delve into the search of truth."

Best Apps for Mastering Twitter

By Matthew Lynley
The Wall Street Journal
March 21, 2013

Twitter has been one of the top social media sites for the last couple of years. Its user count is close to one billion people. Facebook leads the way with over six billion people using it, but Twitter is slowly building its audience. Twitter also has a big mobile interface where there are multiple apps that you can use.

"Seven years ago, Twitter launched. Since then, it has gone from a simple Web interface where you can post Tweets with text messages to having several apps, including ones it builds itself." Twitter has its own app which is the regular one that you can download. There has also been third party companies that have made their own Twitter app to enhance user experience.

"Twitter as well as a few third-party developers have created several apps that are there to help you decipher all that information and make it into something sensible, and help to push content like photos to Twitter.
